The Zenius 2 is the updated version of Evolis’s Zenius line of desktop card printers. It’s aimed at users who need reliable, compact, and cost-effective printing of plastic cards (e.g. ID badges, membership cards, access cards) in small to medium volumes.

It supports single-sided printing (i.e. one side of the card) and comes with enhancements over the original Zenius model, such as higher speeds, additional printing modes (including “rewrite” functionality), and improved capacities.

Strengths & Advantages

  • Compact & desktop-friendly: Small footprint makes it suitable for office or front-desk environments.

  • Improved speed & flexibility: The color printing rate is enhanced vs older models, and monochrome speed is relatively high for its class.

  • Rewritable card support: A useful feature if you use cards that can be erased and reused, which can reduce costs in some use-cases.

  • Modular encoding options: You can extend functionality later (e.g. to read/write magnetic stripes, smart cards) rather than needing a completely new machine.

  • Energy-efficient & eco design: Evolis emphasizes low power consumption, sleep modes, and use of recycled materials.

Limitations & Considerations

  • Single-sided only: Zenius 2 prints on one side of the card. If you need double-sided printing, you’d need a different model.

  • Not the highest color throughput: While 180 cards/hour is decent, for very large print jobs or color-intensive operations, higher-end retransfer or industrial card printers may outperform it.

  • Dependence on Evolis consumables: As with many card printers, you’ll generally use the manufacturer’s ribbons, encoding modules, etc., which can carry premium costs.

  • Environment sensitivity: As with many printers, operating temperature and humidity ranges matter. If your environment is outside the recommended range, print quality or reliability can suffer.

  • Encoding module costs & compatibility: Adding magnetic, contact, or contactless encoders may require additional modules and proper compatibility checks.
